The world mourns the passing of Louise Brooks, an iconic film star of the silent film era, on August 8, 1985 at the age of 78. Louise was born in Cherryvale, Kanas on November 14, 1906, and she studied dance as a child. Her talent brought her to New York and London, and in 1925 she was noticed by Paramount Pictures and was cast in her first film, 'The Street of Forgotten Men'. Although Louise had many small roles throughout the silent era, she was most acclaimed for her performance in G. W. Pabst's 'Pandora's Box', and her portrayal of Lulu, gave birth to the marker of Louise as an icon of silent film. Her image, with her “Coco Chanel style” and her bobbed hair, is still a symbol of the Jazz Age today. Although Louise had a prolific career during the 1920s, she was often labelled as difficult to work with and her popularity waned toward the end of the decade. In the 1930's she worked as a columnist and a nightclub dancer, but had her last role in a 1955 film, 'The Galaxy Invader'. In 1978, Louise was honored with a retrospective at the Popcorn Palace in New York, which launched a renewed interest in her work. Louise wrote a vivid memoir of her life called 'Lulu in Hollywood', which was published in 1982. Louise was a contributor to popular culture, whose image and insight left an indelible mark on generations. She will be deeply missed by her family and fans.
