Lord Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979) passed away on August 27, 1979 at the age of 79. He was a distinguished British royal who had a distinguished military career. He was born in London, England, to Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse. In 1922, he married Edwina Ashley and they had two daughters, Patricia and Pamela. In 1947, he became the last Viceroy of India and served for five months, handling the independence of India and Pakistan peacefully. Throughout WWII, Mountbatten served in important naval posts including Commander-in-Chief, Indian Ocean. After the war, he was appointed Chief of Combined Operations and was very successful in his planning of amphibious invasions on the coasts of Germany and France. His significant contribution to the Allied victory in WWII earned him several awards and he became a popular figure in Britain. In addition to his military career, Mountbatten was also a noted scholar and philanthropist. He worked extensively in literature, economics and business. He was an astute thinker and often had bold ideas on how to develop the country. He was also an active member of civic groups and charities. Lord Mountbatten was a courageous and innovative leader who dedicated his life to his country and people. He will be remembered for his achievements in peace and war. His legacy will live in history.
