Linus Carl Pauling, born February 28, 1901 in Portland, Oregon, died August 19, 1994. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding contributions to science and to the cause of world peace. He was 93 years of age. Linus Pauling was one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century. He worked in many areas of chemistry, including molecular biology, quantum chemistry, and biochemistry, and made several pivotal discoveries that have had a long lasting impact on modern chemistry and biochemistry. He was widely recognized as one of the founders of molecular biology, and many of his ideas remain in the forefront of many important research areas. Pauling was also a vigorous advocate of world peace and nuclear disarmament, a tireless campaigner to reduce the risk of nuclear war. His activism helped to lead to the conclusion of the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963. Pauling will be remembered for his incredible body of work, contributions to the development of new scientific fields, and dedication to peace. His legacy will live on, and his life's work will continue to serve as tremendous source of inspiration for future generations.
