Lev Yashin, one of the most recognized and revered names in football, passed away on March 20th, 1990 at the age of 60. Lev Yashin was born in 1929 in Moscow, Russia, and then went on to become one of the world's most decorated goalkeepers. He started out his career in 1949, when he joined Dynamo Moscow and stayed with the team until his retirement in 1970. Yashin's reputation as one of the best goalkeepers of all time was earned through his unprecedented defensive abilities, unmatched reflexes and exceptional command of his penalty area. He gained fame through his incredible showmanship, which earned him the nickname ‘Black Spider’. Among his many accolades were being voted the 'Best Goalkeeper of the 20th Century' by the IFFHS and being presented with the Ballon d'Or in 1963. He was also the first goalkeeper to ever receive the award of the Soviet Union’s highest honorary title, Order of Lenin, for his accomplishments both on and off the pitch. The impact he had on football will live on forever. He is remembered not only as a master of his craft but also as a hero and an icon who transcended generations. Lev Yashin will be deeply missed.
