Lesley Gore, singer and songwriter of the 1960s, died on February 16th, 2015, at the age of 68. Born in 1946 in Brooklyn, New York as Lesley Sue Goldstein, she gained attention as a teen singing hits such as "It's My Party," "You Don't Own Me" and "Judy's Turn to Cry." Gore's success as a singer, songwriter and producer allowed her to achieve prominent success charting multiple hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the course of her career, she released 16 albums. Gore also wrote and co-produced the Academy Award-nominated title song to the 1980 film Fame. Besides her singing career, Gore also appeared in films such as Girls Town (1959) and The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal (1985). In 2005, she received the prestigious Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and in 2015, she was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Though her career in the spotlight started at a young age, Gore demonstrated a powerful strength and determination throughout her career. Her bold voice and timeless music will continue to inspire us.
