Born Lester William Polfuss on June 9, 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Les Paul was an instrumental figure in the development of the electric guitar, revolutionizing the techniques of guitar playing and recording through his inventions, performances, and recordings. A multi-instrumentalist, he was playing in a country duo at 12, and was playing professionally at 15. He was a pioneer in developing the solid-body electric guitar as well as developing new sound recording techniques. He frequently performed with his wife, Mary Ford, in jazz, pop, and country songs, revolutionizing the way music was recorded in the 1950’s. Les Paul won multiple Grammy awards during his career, including a lifetime achievement award in 2005. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and also held a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
