Lamar Hunt (July 4, 1932 - December 13, 2006) passed away at age 74 in Dallas, Texas. Hunt was a businessman, entrepreneur, and lifelong sportsman. A graduate of Southern Methodist University, he was best known for founding and creating the American Football League (AFL), and helping to bring professional football to the U.S. In 1966, Hunt was an instrumental figure in the merger of the AFL and the National Football League (NFL). Hunt was the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, and was responsible for naming the Super Bowl, the AFL Championship Game which he helped create. He was an instrumental figure in the Dallas Cowboys becoming part of the NFL. Hunt was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972, and the named the NFL Man of the Year in 1974. He was also a member of the Hunt family of billionaires who founded the Hunt Oil Company. Throughout his life, Hunt was passionate about sports and helping promote them in the U.S. He was a true pioneer in the sports world and a lasting legacy for the generations that followed him.
