Kurt von Schleicher, a Prussian army officer and politician, died on June 30, 1934, at the age of 51. Born in 1882, Schleicher was best known for his tenure as German Chancellor from December 1932 to January 1933, when he was toppled by the Nazis and eventually arrested and executed. Prior to his political career, Schleicher had a distinguished career in the German army. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1904, he received a promotion to lieutenant, ultimately becoming chief of staff of an army corps. Schleicher was actively involved in politics during the Weimar Republic, making alliances and meeting with a number of high-profile politicians. In 1932, following the resignation of Chancellor Heinrich BrĂ¼ning, Schleicher was chosen to replace him, making him the youngest German Chancellor to date. Throughout his time in office, Schleicher was a strong advocate of centrist politics in an effort to keep Nazi influence at bay. After his Chancellor role was taken over by Adolf Hitler, Schleicher was arrested and eventually executed as part of the Night of the Long Knives in 1934. His legacy has been remembered throughout German history as a symbol of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth von Schleicher.
