Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, passed away on August 18th, 2018 at the age of 80. Born in Kumasi, Ghana in 1938, Annan was the first black African to serve as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and was known for his dedication to international diplomacy. Annan served with the United Nations from 1962, culminating in his appointment as Secretary-General in 1997, which he held until 2006. Throughout his career, Annan worked to bring attention to a variety of international issues, such as the fight against HIV/AIDS, poverty, famine, gender equality, human rights, and terrorism. He also won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for his work in conflict resolution issues. Annan had a long and distinguished career, and was widely respected throughout the world for his dedication to international affairs. He is remembered as a humanitarian, a diplomat, and a leader in international development. He will be deeply missed.
