Kevin Mitnick, legendary hacker and social engineering expert, passed away on July 16, 2023 at age 59. Mitnick was born on August 6, 1963 in the Los Angeles area. He became well known in the late 1980s and early 1990s for his computer-hacking exploits, which landed him in trouble with the FBI and in prison for several years. He consequently became an icon for hackers, as well as a symbol of the need to investigate and prosecute computer crime. After his imprisonment, Mitnick attempted to turn his reputation and notoriety into success, founding Defensive Thinking, a security consulting firm, in 1998 to help organizations protect their data and eliminate security vulnerabilities. Following this, he wrote multiple books, including two autobiographies, the most successful being "The Art of Deception" in 2002. Not only was Mitnick a renowned figure in the security community, but he was also an active philanthropist, dedicating his time to giving back to his community. He had a strong commitment to philanthropy and was deeply passionate about sharing his security knowledge with the world. Though his life was ultimately cut short, Mitnick left behind an impressive legacy as a security expert, a storyteller, and a philanthropist. He will be remembered and greatly missed.
