Ken Dodd, one of Britain’s most renowned and beloved comedians, has died peacefully at age 90. Beginning his career in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, in the 1950s, Dodd quickly achieved nationwide fame with his trademarked wit and long-winded comedic style. For over sixty years, Dodd was a beloved figure of television, theatre and radio. Despite worldwide fame, Dodd was noted for his loyalty to his hometown of Kirkdale. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool in the year 2000 and was noted for his penchant for charitable works. His expansive career included garnering awards along the way such as the OBE and CBE. His distinctive style of comedy included the “Diddy Men,” which became a staple of his performances, as well as his iconic “Happiness Happiness”, acquiring a generation of devoted fans. Always professional, Dodd was known for hosting seemingly never-ending stage shows of up to five hours. His dedicated admirers were noted to stay until the early hours, often singing along to his signature tune, “Happiness.” He retired in late 2017 after the death of his wife, and was last seen performing in Blackpool in early March 2018. Ken Dodd will be remembered as a sharp wit, master linguist, and beloved comedy figure in the UK.
