Ken Curtis, 74, of Los Angeles, California, died on April 28, 1991. Ken was an actor, director, and singer best known for his role as Sheriff Matt Dillon on the long-running TV series Gunsmoke. He began his career in show business as a singer in various country western bands in the 1940s, with his smooth baritone voice leading to several singing appearances both in films and on record. He made his screen debut in 1940 with the film South of Sanity before going on to appear in classics such as Fort Apache (1948) and Rio Bravo (1959). He starred with John Wayne in both films and appeared in other films alongside stars such as James Stewart, Doris Day, and John Travolta. Off-screen, Ken served in the United States Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant before his discharge at the end of the war. As well as his role as Sheriff Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke, which ran from 1955 to 1975, Ken went on to appear in a number of television series, including Dallas and The A-Team. Ken Curtis passed away in April 1991 at the age of 74. He leaves behind two children and was a much beloved figure in both the film and television industries.
