On July 5th, 2002, Katy Jurado, 78, beloved Mexican film actress, passed away peacefully in her home. Jurado was born in Guadalajara, Mexico on January 16th, 1924, and was best known for her film roles such as High Noon (1952) and One-Eyed Jacks (1961). Before her acting career, she worked as a radio announcer and then became a film actress in 1945 after signing with director Emilio Fernandez's film production company. Her passionate performances in Mexico produced numerous awards including the Silver Bear for best actress at the 1961 Berlin International Film Festival, a Silver Ariel for Best Actress in 1952 and 1953, and a Golden Globe in 1954. Jurado’s talent was heralded in both Mexico and abroad, and she was well-known for bringing Mexican talent to the international stage. She was the first Mexican actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, garnering a nod for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Broken Lance (1954). Jurado will be remembered for her immense contribution to the film industry and for her legacy as one of Mexico’s most beloved actresses. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Velazquez, to whom she was married for fifty-one years. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Marcela.
