Karl Lagerfeld, iconic German fashion designer, passed away on February 19th, 2019, at the age of 85. Karl was born in Hamburg, Germany on September 10th, 1933 to loving parents Elisabeth and Otto Lagerfeld. He started a career as a professional fashion designer at the age of 21, working for labels such as Pierre Balmain and Jean Patou. In 1966, he was appointed artistic director for Chloe. In 1983, Karl became the creative director of Chanel, where he was responsible for bringing a modern twist to Coco Chanel's iconic style. Throughout his career in fashion, Karl also worked as creative director at Fendi since 1965, and founded his own label, Karl Lagerfeld. His designs have been acclaimed around the world, helping to shape the fashion industry. Karl was also a renowned photographer, artist and author. He published numerous contributions to magazines and books, his most iconic being Karl Lagerfeld's Guide to Monograms and Other Meditations on the Iconic Signature published in 2018. Throughout his career, Karl won multiple awards, including three Council of Fashion Designers of America awards in 1986, 1989 and 1999, the German national fashion award in 1996 and a Légion d'Honneur award from France in 2012. Karl will be remembered as one of the great fashion design legends of the twentieth century, known for his revolutionary designs, distinctive style, and innovative vision. His work will continue to be celebrated in the fashion industry and beyond.
