It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Wetterhahn on June 8th, 1997, at the age 48. Karen was a professor of chemistry at Dartmouth College who was largely remembered for her pioneering research of heavy metals, particularly mercury. Her specialized work enabled scientists and physicians to gain a better understanding of how the body processes these metals. She was a prominent member of the National Institute of Health, the American Chemical Society and the American Physical Society. Karen was a devoted mother, wife and mentor. She inspired her peers and students through her knowledge and hard work. Her prestige in the scientific world was of a unique caliber and she will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
