The former Queen of the Netherlands, Julianna of the Netherland, died today at the age of 94. Juliana was born in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1909, to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and Prince Hendrik of the Netherlands. Upon Wilhelmina's accession to the throne in 1948, Juliana succeeded her as the Queen of the Netherlands and reigned until her abdication in 1980, when her daughter Beatrix succeeded her. During her reign, Juliana devoted much of her time to human rights causes, many with a particular focus on women's rights. She was awarded the United Nations Human Rights Award in 1978 in recognition of her commitment to promoting UN ideals and values. The Queen was also an active patron of several organizations, including the Red Cross, the Dutch Girl Guides, and War Child. Juliana was married twice and had four daughters. She is survived by her four daughters, nine grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. A funeral will be held in the coming days to honor the life and memory of Queen Juliana.
