Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., former Member of the United States Congress, died on November 18, 1969 at 81 years old. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 6, 1888, Kennedy attended Boston Latin School and Harvard University. During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy, and upon his return to the United States, he worked in the financial industry, becoming one of the wealthiest men in the country. Kennedy was elected to the US House of Representatives in Massachusetts' 11th Congressional District in 1922 and served until 1947. His public service included roles as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, both under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Kennedy is survived by his wife Rose and nine children, including future President John F. Kennedy.
