On 1996-05-20, British actor Jon Pertwee died after a lengthy battle with poor health. He was 76. Known by many as the third Doctor Who on the long-running BBC sci-fi series, Pertwee had been an actor since the 1940s and starred in a number of movies, television shows, radio series, and stage productions. In addition to his work on Doctor Who, Pertwee established a close relationship with the BBC audience through regular appearances on shows like the The Goodies and The Navy Lark. He starred in comedy shows for over 20 years and was a popular figure in the entertainment industry. In addition to his work on screen, Pertwee also wrote several books and was an avid painter, taking part in several art exhibitions. Pertwee was predeceased by his brother Michael and is survived by his sister Avril, three children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
