Johnny Weissmuller, 1979-1984, passed away on January 21, 1984, at the age of 79. A native of Austria-Hungary, Weissmuller was an American competitive swimmer and actor. He achieved international fame as an Olympic swimmer by winning five gold medals, one bronze medal, and setting 67 world records between 1924 and 1928. He broke the world record for the 100-meter freestyle in 1922 and was undefeated in any freestyle swimming event at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics. His records were only broken in the 1950s after the development of the butterfly stroke. As an actor, Weissmuller is best remembered for portraying the fictional character Tarzan in twelve films between 1932 and 1948. After his swimming and acting careers had come to a close, he later worked as a volunteer lifeguard in Florida. A prolific sportsman and a celebrated figure of popular culture, he will be remembered by many for his accomplishments.
