On Sept. 15, 2004, Johnny Ramone, known worldwide as the guitarist and founding member of punk rock group the Ramones, died at the age of 55 in Los Angeles, California. Ramone was born John Cummings in Queens, New York. Raised in Long Island, he joined bassist Dee Dee Ramone, singer Joey Ramone, and drummer Tommy Ramone to form the Ramones in 1974. Influencing generations of musicians, the Ramones pioneered the punk rock style with an iconic blend of fast-paced guitars, high-energy drums, and punk-inflected vocals. The Ramones released their first album, Ramones, in 1976 and earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2002. It was during this time where Ramone made a name for himself as a mentor to new punk artists. Ramone is survived by his wife Linda and their 5-year-old son, J.R. Ramone, as well as countless fans around the world who remembered his signature loud, fast, and aggressive guitar sound.
