It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of legendary singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. Johnny, aged 71, passed away peacefully on September 12th, 2003. Born in Kingsland, Arkansas, on February 26th, 1932, Johnny was the son of Ray and Carrie Cash. He followed in his family’s musical tradition, honing his skills as a songwriter while in the Air Force, and eventually signing with Sun Records in 1955. In the ensuing years, Johnny Cash's trademark husky baritone and music that celebrated the struggles of the working-class earned him worldwide acclaim and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980. Johnny Cash's songs transcended countries, cultures, and generations, ranging from iconic ballads such as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Ring of Fire," to covers of songs popularized by the likes of Bob Dylan and Nine Inch Nails. As generous as he was beloved, Johnny Cash donated generously to many charitable causes, including supporting help for Native Americans in their struggles against government bureaucracy. He is survived and remembered by his wife, June Carter Cash, four daughters and his sons John Carter and Rosanne. He is also survived by grandchildren, and many millions of devoted fans. The world has lost one of the finest musicians of all time. We will continue to remember Johnny Cash by embracing his music, and his spirit.

I could just remember how my father used to say that the reason for living was to get ready to stay dead a long time. William Faulkner
