John Witherspoon, beloved actor, comedian, writer, and producer, died peacefully at 77 years old on October 29, 2019. John was born on January 27, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up in Detroit, he attended Michigan State University and began doing stand-up comedy. His career in show business began with appearances on Late Night with David Letterman and a recurring role on the television show "The Twilight Zone". He is perhaps best known for his role as "Pops" on the iconic show, "The Wayans Brothers", and for his iconic performance in the classic comedy film "Friday". He also starred in the "House Party" films and in the iconic TV series "Martin", along with Martin Lawrence. His other credits include appearances on "The Love Boat", "Hollywood Squares", and "Living Single". In 1999, he won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. John was an avid lover of music. He released two hip-hop albums and was featured in hit songs with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Pimp C. John is survived by his wife, Angela, two daughters, and one son. He will be fondly remembered for his work in comedy, music, and film, as well as his warm and generous spirit. He was a loving husband, father, and friend who brought joy to many.
