John Thaw, the British actor and icon of television, passed away at the age of 60 on February 21st, 2002. He was best known for his role as the hardworking yet affable Inspector Banks in the popular UK TV series "Inspector Morse." Born to working-class parents in 1942 in Manchester, England, John showed his love for acting from a young age, training as a part of Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. He received further training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, before beginning his professional career in his early twenties. His career was lengthy, with many memorable roles spanning stage and film, from his early performance in 1962’s "Growing Up" and his award-winning role of Eddie Race in the film "TheSweeney" to his 30 year career as an iconic actor in the television world. It is likely that many of his fans were initially drawn to his engaging roles in "Inspector Morse," "Kavanagh QC," and "A Year in Provence." John is remembered for his brilliant acting, warm humour, and his legacy in British television. He will live on in the hearts of those he left behind.
