John McCain (born August 29, 1936, died Aug. 25, 2018) was an American Statesman and U.S. Senator from the state of Arizona for nearly six decades. McCain enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1958 and served as a naval aviator up until 1981. He remained in the Navy Reserve until retiring as a captain in 1981. During the Vietnam War, McCain was almost killed during an attack on his A-4 jet. He was taken as a prisoner of war and held for four years. He was released in 1973. He began his political career shortly after being discharged and ran for the U.S. House of Representatives but lost to the Democratic incumbent. He ran again in 1982 and was elected as the U.S. representative from Arizona's 1st district and served until 1986, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate. McCain served six terms in the Senate beginning his 23-year career in 1987. During his time in the Senate, McCain received national recognition as a Republican maverick for his strong and independent stance on many issues. John McCain was a tireless advocate for the nation and he fought courageously and valiantly until the end. He will be remembered as a beloved husband, friend, and father who led an honorable and purposeful life. He touched countless lives and will be dearly missed.
