It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of John Pombe Magufuli, aged 61, on 17 March 2021. John Magufuli was born in Chato, Tanzania in 1959. He studied chemistry and mathematics at the University of Dar es Salaam before entering politics and ascending the ranks to become president of the United Republic of Tanzania in 2015. During his time as president, John Magufuli was most known for his commitment to economic, social and infrastructure reforms, as well as his strong stance on corruption and his dedication to improving education, health and environmental protection. John Magufuli will be remembered for his tireless work towards advancing his country, as well as for his unwavering moral compass and his sincere dedication towards making Tanzania a fairer, more equitable and more prosperous nation. He is survived by his wife, Janeth Magufuli, their two children and two grandchildren. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
