John Jacob Astor IV, the great-grandson of John Jacob Astor, one of America's first multimillionaire families, passed away on April 15, 1912 at the ag of 47. A respected philanthropist and an extremely successful businessman, Astor was born in New York City to William Backhouse Astor Jr. and Caroline Webster Lina Schermerhorn on July 13, 1864. Trained to take over the family business by his father, Astor was well-known as a real estate mogul and a prominent member of New York's high society. At age 18, he inherited a large part of his father’s fortune, estimated to be worth over $75 million (approximately $2 billion today). He continued to expand the family business over the years, owning many premier real estate properties, including New York's famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. John Jacob Astor IV used his wealth to his support numerous charities, and donated lavishly to causes ranging from the education of working class children to the restoring of historic buildings. Astor is known to be one of the most well-known passengers to have died on the ill-fated RMS Titanic when it sank into the icy depths of the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. At the time of his death, he was survived by his wife, Madeline, his son Vincent and a daughter, Ava. John Jacob Astor IV was remembered for his extraordinary success as a businessman, his commitment to philanthropy, and his generous and kindhearted spirit. He will be deeply missed.
