John Huston, legendary film director, writer, actor and artist, passed away on August 28, 1987 at 81 years old. A five-time Academy Award nominee, Huston was known for his towering presence in Hollywood for over half a century, his iconic films such as "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), "The African Queen" (1951), and "The Man Who Would Be King" (1975), and his impressive oeuvre. Born in Nevada City, California in 1906, he was the son of actor Walter Huston and Rhea Gore, and the father of actress Anjelica Huston. After attending Missouri Military Academy and University of California, Los Angeles and California School of Fine Arts, Huston found his calling as a director, writer and actor. After signing a contract with Warner Bros. in 1941, he established himself as a leading figure in Hollywood, crafting iconic films such as "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950) and "Moby Dick" (1956). Huston battled throat cancer for years and endured multiple surgeries. His toughness and talents earned him an enduring respect and admiration among his peers. He won an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1985 and was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1996. John Huston will be remembered as one of the most celebrated figures in Hollywood's history. Gone but never forgotten, he will be sorely missed.
