It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Havlicek, a basketball star whose legendary career spanned almost two decades with the Boston Celtics. John Havlicek was born on April 8, 1940, in Martins Ferry, Ohio. He attended high school in Bridgeport, participating in multiple sports, including basketball, track and field, and baseball. In college, he attended Ohio State University on a basketball scholarship. After graduating, he was drafted eighth overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1962 NBA Draft. In his first season with the Celtics, John averaged 15.4 points per game and began to make a name for himself as one of the best shooting guards in the league. He went on to achieve numerous accomplishments throughout his career, including eight NBA championships, five All-Star appearances, one NBA Finals MVP, and one NBA All-Star Game MVP. He was Immortalized in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as well as being named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. John retired after sixteen years with the Celtics in 1978. He returned to the court training teams and giving lessons until his retirement at the age of 79. John Havlicek will be remembered as the beloved basketball champion he was - strong, resilient, determined, and inspirational. He had a tremendous impact on the game of basketball and his spirit lives on in everyone he inspired. May he rest in peace.
