John Dingell, Jr., passed away on February 7, 2019 at the age of 92. He is best known for his 59-year tenure in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1955 to 2015 - the longest ever for a sitting congressman. Born on July 8, 1926 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dingell attended Georgetown University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, during which he was injured in battle. Shortly after, he attended the University of Michigan Law School and was an attorney in private practice and a public administrator in Detroit. In 1954, Dingell took office in the House upon defeating the incumbent, his own father. He went on to chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee for 28 years during his time in office. During his tenure, he worked on legislation related to health care, welfare, pensions, energy, technology, and conservation. Dingell is preceded in death by his wife Deborah, who served as a House of Representatives member for several years and who passed away in 2015. Dingell is survived by his children.
