John Cassavetes, American film director, actor and screenwriter, passed away on February 3, 1989 at the age of 59. Born in New York City on December 9, 1929, Cassavetes had a long and successful career in the entertainment industry. He began his career as an actor in the 1950s, appearing in films such as Crime in the Streets, The Garment Jungle and Too Late Blues. His directing career began in the early 1960s, with his groundbreaking feature film Shadows. This led to further works such as Faces, A Woman Under the Influence, and Opening Night. His work has had a lasting influence on the industry, with his directors inspiring many of today's filmmakers. Cassavetes received much acclaim for his work, winning multiple awards including the Best Acting Oscar for Minnie and Moskowitz in 1971. He was also a three-time recipient of the Cannes Awards for Best Film. Cassavetes is survived by his wife, actress Gena Rowlands, as well as three children. His legacy will remain an important part of American cinema history.
