Johan Cruyff, a legendary footballer, passed away on March 24, 2016, at age 68. Born Hendrik Johannes Cruijff in 1947 in Amsterdam, Cruyff quickly rose to fame as a professional footballer for Ajax Amsterdam, before moving to play for clubs across Europe. In his illustrious career, Cruyff won European Cup titles with both Ajax and FC Barcelona, in addition to numerous other titles. Additionally, he was awarded three Ballon d'Or awards, recognising him as the best European footballer three times. What made Cruyff a legend was his style of play and the philosophy associated with it. He embodied the spirit of "total football", an offensive-minded approach where players occupied various positions on the pitch, blending technical ability and attacking intent. Cruyff’s tactics have had a lasting effect on world football and impacted generations of players and teams. Of equal note are Cruyff’s contributions off the pitch. After retiring as a player, he went on to manage FC Barcelona, leading them to their first European Cup title and four Spanish titles. He was later appointed as the Honorary President of the club. In addition, Cruyff was an active supporter of social causes, creating the Johan Cruyff Institute for sports studies in 1997 and the Johan Cruyff Foundation for children with disabilities. Cruyff is survived by his wife Danny and four children. He will be remembered as one of the greatest and most influential football players of his generation.
