Joseph Vincent Paterno, 85, passed away on January 22, 2012. He was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1926 and graduated from Brown University and subsequently earned a master’s degree from Penn State University. A highly respected sports figure, Joe Paterno served for over six decades as head coach in football for the Penn State Nittany Lions, who won two national championships and 379 games. He was awarded eight Big Ten titles, and his teams won 24 bowl games. He was recognized as the national coach of the year twice and the Big Ten coach of the year three times. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003. In addition to his successful coaching career, Joe Paterno was a philanthropist, an advocate for higher education, and the author of several books. He was the father of five children and had 17 grandchildren. Joe Paterno is remembered as one of the greatest coaches in college football.
