Joachim von Ribbentrop, 53, died on October 16, 1946. Von Ribbentrop was a German diplomat and Nazi politician. He was born in 1893 in Wesel, Germany and served in the German Army during World War I. Von Ribbentrop had a decorated career in Germany’s diplomacy before and during World War II. He was appointed Foreign Minister of the Third Reich in 1938, and held this role until the regime’s collapse in 1945. He served as Germany’s ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1936–1938. He participated in the negotiations that led to Germany’s signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with the Soviet Union in 1939. In 1946, von Ribbentrop was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. He was executed on October 16, 1946.
