James Earl "Jimmy" Carter Jr., the 39th President of the United States, passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024. Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter was the eldest son of James Earl Carter Sr. and Bessie Lillian Gordy. He grew up on a peanut farm and attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology before receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy. Carter served in the United States Navy for seven years, where he worked as a submariner and eventually became a lieutenant. After leaving the Navy, he entered the world of politics, serving in the Georgia Senate from 1963 to 1967 and then as the Governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. In 1976, Carter successfully ran for President, defeating incumbent Gerald Ford. During his term, he focused on domestic issues such as energy conservation, environmental protection, and human rights. He also brokered the Camp David Accords, which led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. After leaving office, Carter continued to be involved in various humanitarian efforts, including founding the Carter Center, which promotes democracy and human rights worldwide. He also served as a mediator in international conflicts, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Carter is survived by his wife of 74 years, Rosalynn, and their four children. He will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his unwavering commitment to peace and human rights, and his humble and down-to-earth nature. He leaves behind a lasting legacy as a compassionate leader and a champion of justice and equality.
