Jim Backus, an iconic actor and comedian, passed away on July 3, 1989, at the age of 76. Throughout his illustrious career, Backus was best remembered and beloved for his role as hapless playground millionaire Thurston Howell III on the CBS television sitcom Gilligan's Island, which aired from 1964 to 1967. His career also included an extensive number of roles in radio and television, film, animation, and commercials. Beginning in the 1940's, he began a steady career in radio, playing characters like the voice of Margarita on the show Hungry Homer. Throughout the 1950's, he continued to work in radio with performances in shows such as My Little Margie. Backus also had an extensive film career. From 1947-1951, he worked alongside the Marx Brothers in films such as Love Happy and Double Dynamite. He also starred in several movies including It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), Rascal (1969), and The Caddy (1953). In addition, he lent his vocal talent to cartoons, most notably voicing the part of Mr. Magoo (from 1949-1977). Jim Backus was a much loved figure, and his work in radio, television, cartoons, and film will continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.
