Jiang Zemin, former President of the People's Republic of China, died on November 30, 2022 at the age of 96. He was a leader who greatly impacted the nation’s economic growth and international relations in the late 20th century and beyond. He began his political career as the mayor of Shanghai in 1985 before becoming the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China. In 1989, he was appointed as the country’s third president and served in that role until 2003. During his presidency, Jiang helped to improve the country’s legal and economic institutions and oversaw the transition of China's economy from a planned to a market economy. He also supported China's entry into the World Trade Organization. One of his greatest achievements was the launch of the "Go Out" policy, which increased China’s influence in the world economy, politics, and culture. He also successfully advocated for the reunification of Hong Kong with China in 1997. Jiang’s legacy will endure as one of the most impressive reforms of modern Chinese history. His dedication to the Chinese people will not be forgotten.
