Jerry Falwell, prominent evangelical preacher and founder of Liberty University, passed away on May 15, 2007 at 73 years old. An influential figure in the evangelical movement, Falwell was best known for establishing the Lynchburg-based Liberty University, an influential Christian college, in 1971. During his tenure, he also founded the Thomas Road Baptist Church, the Moral Majority organization, Liberty Alliance and Liberty Counsel. Prior to his death, Falwell was known for his controversial opinions on social issues, often taking a hard line in opposition to homosexuality and evolution. He was also criticized for his support for President George W. Bush’s Iraq war efforts. He is survived by his wife, Macel Pate Falwell, sons Jerry Jr. and Jonathan, daughter Jeannie, two brothers, and two sisters.
