Dr Jerry Buss, who passed away on the 18th February 2013, was a successful business magnate and legendary owner of the Los Angeles Lakers for more than three decades. Having acquired the franchise in 1979, under Dr Buss’ guidance, the Lakers became one of the most successful teams in the history of the National Basketball Association, winning 10 National Basketball Association championships during his tenure. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1933, the precocious Dr Buss was a maths prodigy and completed his PhD in physical chemistry at age 24. His career also included real estate investments and ownership of the Los Angeles Strings professional tennis team. Dr Buss was a respected member of the business and sporting communities. He was inducted into multiple Halls of Fame, including Sports Business's Hall of Fame, Basketball Hall of Fame and World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame. He is survived by his six children.
