Jeremy Thorpe, former leader of the Liberal Party, has died at 85 years old. Born in London, England, on April 29, 1929, Jeremy Thorpe attended Eton College before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1959, he was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for North Devon, a position he held until 1979. He was the leader of the Liberal Party from 1967 to 1976 and became the first leader of the Liberal-Social Democratic Alliance in 1981. Thorpe is fondly remembered for his rallies and as an outspoken advocate for reform, as he pushed for greater disability rights, abolition of the death penalty, and for Britain to remain in Europe. Throughout his life, Thorpe faced much criticism, including accusations of conspiring to murder another man in the 1970s after a relationship between the two men. He was eventually acquitted of the charges after a trial. He is survived by his sons Rupert and Barnaby and his former wife Caroline.
