Jean-Claude Duvalier, better known as Baby Doc, the former president of Haiti who ruled with an iron fist from 1971 to 1986, died on October 4th, 2014 at the age of 63 in Port-au-Prince. Duvalier was born in Port-au-Prince on July 3rd, 1951. He ascended to power at the age of 19 after the death of his father Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier to become Haiti's President-for-Life. Duvalier's presidency was characterized by widespread human rights violations including a secret police force known as the "Tonton Macoute" that was responsible for a reign of terror throughout the country. He fled Haiti in 1986 after increasing international and domestic pressure to step down. Duvalier's exile ended with his return to Haiti in 2011. Duvalier is survived by his wife Veronique Roy, kids YoAnne Duvalier and Jean Claude Duvalier Jr, and siblings Francois Duvalier Jr., Nicole Duvalier, Claudine Duvalier, and Simone Duvalier. He will be remembered as a controversial figure as much read history will debate the successes and failures of his two-decade rule in Haiti.
