Jayaprakash Narayan, prominent Indian leader and freedom fighter, passed away on October 8th, 1979, aged 76. He was born in October 11th, 1902, in Srikant, Jabalpur, India. He rose to prominence during the Indian Independence Movement in the 1940s, joining the Non-Violent Movement Prarthana Samaj led by Gandhi and Nehru. During this time, Jayaprakash Narayan was at the forefront of the Quit India Movement in 1942, for which he was incarcerated by the British authorities. After India's independence, Narayan was a prominent social reformer, advocating democracy and civil rights. He raised awareness of inequality during a 'Total Revolution' Movement in 1974, for which he was affectionately known as 'Loknayak' ("People's Hero"). Narayan was a leader and role-model to millions, and will be remembered for his commitment and dedication to freedom and social justice. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by family, friends and large swathes of the Indian public.
