Jan Hooks, a beloved American actress and comedian, passed away on October 9, 2014 at the age of 57.
Born Jean Marie Hooks in Syracuse, New York in 1957, Hooks was known for her comedic acting performances in films and TV shows such as Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, A Fish Called Wanda, Designing Women, Saturday Night Live, 3rd Rock From the Sun, and 30 Rock.
Her success as a comedian began at Second City in Atlanta, Georgia in 1978, where she met her long-time friend, Julia Sweeney, before moving to Chicago and joining the Second City Troupe. In 1984, she joined Saturday Night Live, becoming a cast member for five years.
Hooks also made television appearances on shows such as Herman’s Head, My Name is Earl, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Futurama, Seinfeld, and Just Shoot Me.
Her work on Saturday Night Live earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, as well as an American Comedy Award and a Satellite Award.
For her work in films and on television, Hooks was nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Comedy Album for her work on Audio Movie-The Princess Bride.
