James Connolly, a prominent figure in Irish history, passed away on May 12, 1916 at the age of 47. He was a revolutionary socialist and trade union leader who played a significant role in the Easter Rising of 1916. Connolly was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 5, 1868. He grew up in poverty and faced oppression as an Irish immigrant. He was a self-educated man who joined the British army at the young age of 14. He rose to the rank of sergeant major and was stationed in Ireland for several years. In 1896, Connolly left the army and dedicated himself to the labor movement. He joined the Irish Socialist Republican Party and later became the founder and leader of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union. His strong belief in the rights of the working class led him to take part in numerous strikes and protests. Connolly's involvement in politics grew over the years, and he became a vocal advocate for Irish independence. He joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and played a significant role in planning the Easter Rising. Despite being in poor health and unable to actively participate in the fighting, he served as commanding officer at the General Post Office in Dublin. The Easter Rising ultimately failed, and Connolly was seriously wounded and captured by British forces. Despite efforts to save him, he was executed by firing squad on May 12, 1916.
