Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell, passed away at the age of 37 on October 30th, 2002. Born and raised in Hollis, Queens, New York, Jay was a legendary hip-hop disc jockey and record producer. Growing up in an era surrounded by hip-hop, he quickly took an interest in the art, which became his life passion. He started as a member of Run-DMC, an iconic hip-hop band, and served as their DJ where his turntable skills caught the attention of producers and record labels. In the 1980s, Jam Master Jay achieved commercial success as a rapper and a DJ in the group, making a name for himself in the hip-hop world. He was even acknowledged by MTV for his skill in making scratches and loops with the turntable. He also offered up-and-coming hip-hop artists an opportunity to shine through his production label, JMJ Records. It was through his label that he shook the hip-hop world with Dash 5’s hit single “Sucker MCs” as well as featuring the artist on Run-DMC’s fifth album. He was loved by many, including his family, friends, and fans, and his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched in the hip-hop community.
