Jackie Robinson, 53, passed away on October 24, 1972. He is best remembered as a legendary athlete whose impact on Major League Baseball was revolutionary. His courage, skills, and leadership broke the color barrier in baseball and proved that African-Americans had the talent to compete at the highest level. Born in Georgia in 1919, Robinson showed promise as an athlete in his youth. Before becoming a major league player, he served in the US Army and played in the Negro Leagues. Robinson made his Major League debut in 1947 as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. During his 10-year career, he won the National League MVP in 1949, was a six-time All-Star, and five-time steal champion. He was also the first African-American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Aside from his accomplishments on the field, Robinson was a civil rights activist who fought against racism and segregation throughout his life. His legacy will be felt for generations to come. He is survived by his wife Rachel, his children Jackie Jr. and Sharon, and his brother Mack. He will be dearly missed.
