Jack Swigert, an American aviator and astronaut who achieved international acclaim by participating in the Apollo 13 mission, passed away peacefully on December 27th, 1982, at the age of 51. Jack Swigert was born near Denver, Colorado, on August 30th, 1931. After attending the University of Colorado and earning two degrees, Swigert joined the Air Force, eventually earning the rank of captain. In April 1966, Jack Swigert was selected as an astronaut by NASA and he participated in three successful space flights, participating in the Apollo 7, Apollo 10, and Apollo 13 missions. On the latter mission, commanded by Apollo 13 Commander James Lovell, Swigert became the world's celebrity astronaut by uttering the words "Uh, Houston, we've had a problem here." Even after his retirement from NASA in 1972, Jack Swigert continued to be a passionate proponent of the space agency and its mission. His spirit of exploration and scientific curiosity live on through his legacy as one of the most famous astronauts of the latter twentieth century. Jack Swigert will be remembered by many as an adventurer and a dedicated pilot. He was greatly loved and will be incredibly missed.
