Jack Kerouac, widely known for his influential and groundbreaking writings about the Beat Generation, has died at 47 years old. Born in 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts, Kerouac wrote several revered novels, including Dharma Bums and On the Road, fueling an alluring and turbulent portrayal of discontentment and liberty sought by intervening generations, and introducing a new concept of a "spontaneous, unfettered lifestyle." Kerouac left behind an indelible legacy of restless wanderlust, with novels focusing on drug-fueled, unfettered freedom. His writing was both inspirational and groundbreaking, and he will be remembered as a defining cultural figure of the tumultuous 1950s and 1960s. Kerouac is survived by a daughter and his brother Gerard. His departure marks the end of an era, and he will be greatly missed.
