Jack Kemp, the American politician, died May 2, 2009, in Washington, DC. He was 73. Kemp was born Jack French Kemp in Los Angeles, California in 1935. The son of a truck driver, Kemp excelled both on and off the field, showing his skills as an athlete, scholar and public servant. Kemp served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He continued with a successful career of collegiate football in California and New York, where he graduated from Occidental College in 1957 and then went on to be drafted by the NFL's Detroit Lions. In 1957, Kemp was signed by the San Diego Chargers and then traded to the Buffalo Bills in 1962, where he became the starting quarterback. Kemp was an American Football League All-Star seven times and an AFL Most Valuable Player in 1965. After his professional football career, Kemp focused his attention on public service. From 1971, Kemp held numerous positions in the Nixon, Ford and Bush administrations, eventually serving as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1989 to 1993. Kemp represented New York’s 38th Congressional District from 1971 to 1989. He sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Main Kemp, and his four children.
