It is with sadness that we mourn the passing of Jack Bruce, who died on October 25, 2014 at the age of 71. Jack Bruce was a Scottish bassist, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, best known as the bassist and lead vocalist for the British rock band Cream. During his career, he explored a variety of different musical genres including jazz, psychedelia, blues, and hard rock. He was voted tenth in the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Bass Guitarists of All Time". Devoted to music from an early age, he began playing the cello at 10 and joined local bands throughout his teenage years. He went on to study music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. In 1966, he joined the jazz-rock supergroup Cream, the format of which also included guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker. Famed for its dynamic live performances, the band developed a large following throughout the world and went on to become one of the most successful bands of the 1960s. Throughout his life, Bruce released many solo albums, collaborated with various musicians, performed in bands including the Jack Bruce Band, the Graham Bond Organization, and West, Bruce and Laing. He also taught at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen and released an autobiography in 2003 entitled 'Odd Man Out: The Story of the free jazz revolution'. Jack Bruce will be remembered as a rock pioneer who left an indelible mark on the music world with his influential and unique style. He is survived by his four children.
