Jack Benny, legendary radio, television, and film star, passed away at the age of eighty on December 26th, 1974. Born Benjamin Kubelsky in February 1894 in Waukegan, Illinois, Benny developed a love of comedy early on and began performing as a violinist at vaudeville shows during his teenage years. Benny perfected his famous tightwad character in the 1930s, when he first appeared on radio series. Benny's radio program eventually ran for twenty-five years and was successful enough on its own to make Benny a household name. He eventually moved to the visual medium of television, and the Jack Benny Program ran from 1950-1965. Benny's fame in the entertainment industry did not end there, however, as he also appeared in a number of films including The Horn Blows at Midnight, Charade, and The Money Pit. Benny was also the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and numerous awards from organizations like the National Broadcasting Company and the Friars' Club. Jack Benny will be remembered not only for his comedic genius, but also for his compassionate spirit and generosity. He will be greatly missed by his fans and those who knew him.

Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is just a passing shadow of a cloud. Yann Martel
